More Things To See And Do In The Shuswap Scenic Shuswap Lake offers excellent opportunities for having fun and relaxation. There are more than 1,000 kilometres of shoreline for you to discover. 26 provincial marine parks, with sandy beaches and waterfalls are waiting for you to explore. Along the shores, primitive rock paintings can be found. Fishing is excellent, hikers will enjoy the many hiking trails, leading to waterfalls and through the forests. Sorrento - This historic town is named after the famous Italian city and is nestled on the shore of Shuswap Lake together with the communities of Notch Hill, Blind Bay, Balmoral and White Lake. Sorrento is on the Trans Canada Highway 28 kms west of Salmon Arm and offers the fabulous recreational activities common to the Shuswap area. CLUB. Adams River - The Adams River connects Adams and Shuswap Lakes and is situated within the boundaries of Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park. Every fall the largest Pacific Sockeye Salmon run in the world takes place right here with up to 2 million fish returning to their spawning grounds. Pacific Sockeye start their journey in fall. They leave the ocean to enter the Fraser River and at Hells Gate massive cataracts test the salmon's strength before they enter the Thompson River. Before reaching Shuswap Lake they have to pass the South Thompson River before finally reaching their destination in the Adams River which provides the perfect spawning habitat. It takes the Salmon 3 weeks and 450 km to reach the Adams River. It is a very colourful spectacle with the salmon turning a brilliant red. Every four years the dominant run occurs and the number of salmon returning peaks. Parking lots are available at Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Park, approximately 15 minute drive from Sorrento. Trails lead to the river and the spawning grounds. Adams River is also popular with whitewater enthusiasts and kayakers, as the river rapids offer great fun and challenges. Cross Country Ski trails are located at Directions: Travel South of Salmon Arm on Hwy. 97B for 12kms & turn on Grandview Bench Rd. Follow this road for 5km & turn left on Edger Rd. Follow for 6km to the parking area. Description: 150 kilometre network, covering terrain in the 3500 to 4000 foot range, lets you explore the high country winterscape. and at Skmana Lake, 14 km. from downtown Chase. There are 15 km of groomed and track set trails ranging from beginners to advanced. There is a very easy 4.5 km trail around Skmana Lake that novices find most enjoyable. This portion of the system is in a park like setting and on a sunny day the winter scene can be spectacular. The remaining trails wind through the hillside along old logging roads. Trail Maps are posted at intersections on the trail system. Skiers familiar with the area and in good physical condition can ski into the back country on ungroomed logging roads. There is a small warming hut near the lake about 500 meters from the parking area, firewood is available. HOW TO GET THERE: The ski season usually starts around mid December and lasts until the end of February. Trails are at the 700 meter level and accordingly they are subject to changing weather conditions. You may, on occasion experience periods during the ski season when the temperature goes above zero, which of course adversely affects snow conditions. Trails are being developed higher up the mountain which will provide better snow conditions but will be more difficult to reach, particularly for novices.
